Want to Be a Small Business Mentor?

MicroMentor is launching a new program called the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) Program, targeting high-school and college students who own and operate high growth potential businesses. The mentoring program is designed to provide GSEA student finalists with access to mentors who can help these emerging entrepreneurs to develop leadership skills and grow their business. Acting as a mentor looks like this:

Your mentoring will consist of face-to-face meetings as well as phone and email communication in a structured, year-long mentoring relationship. Mentors will also participate in a custom training session, and complete surveys to evaluate progress and program results. EO will provide mentors with meeting templates, best practices, strategy tools, and guidelines. Within these formal mentoring relationships, mentees are responsible to create growth objectives and milestones, while mentors provide insight, perspective and support within a safe, intimate environment of idea and experience exchange.

Report from the Capital Access Innovation Summit

Image representing New York Times as depicted ... Ami Kassar at the New York Times "You're the Boss" column writes to us about his experiences at the Capital Access Innovation Summit, hosted by the Small Business Administration and the Department of the Treasury, and was intended to "strengthen capital formation for start-ups and small businesses."

While "In the morning, the plenary sessions featured ... carefully scripted messages with a group of about 150 of us who had gathered for the day," he said this about the afternoon break out sessions:

I realized that many of them suffer frustrations similar to my own... The discussions had a different vibe. Instead of contributing to an us-versus-them confrontation, we all rolled up our sleeves and tried to figure out the right things to do.

Head over and read the whole thing to get a better sense of the folks Kassar found most helpful.  The account comes across as both genuine and helpful.
